Water Quality

Rusty Water Cleaned in 4 Months

A farmer in the Waikuku area of Canterbury had major problems with his water supply. In years gone by a wool scouring plant was built slightly upstream but in the neighbouring property. When the farmer moved into his house, the water was ‘like gear oil for a tractor’. Imagine the experience turning on a tap. Instead of beautiful fresh water untainted by chemicals, the liquid coming out was like liquid brown effluent (and it also had a metallic smell). Needless to say, drinking the water was out of the question and bathing in it almost required wearing full PPE. “It was bloody awful” stated the farmer.

HydroBoost were approached to clean the water without any nasty chemicals and provide an ongoing solution which was natural. The first task was to collect a baseline water sample and have it analysed by Hill Laboratories in Christchurch. The report clearly showed that the water was not fit for drinking and exceeded many of the standards.

A HydoBoost unit was installed on the main Water Abstraction Point for the water tank and results monitored. Right from the start, the customer was advised that it would not be an overnight miracle and that based on other installations in the North Island, it could take two to four months before the water quality would improve. There was some suggestion to dump chemicals into the water tank, but the outcome was to let the HydroBoost unit do its work.

After two months, the water was tested with a 78% reduction in Iron and 24% reduction in Manganese. The customer was impressed, however, after four months the customer was blown away.

The water as tested by Hill Laboratories at the end of November, (four months) showed a 99% reduction in Iron and 68% reduction in Manganese. The report highlighted that the Manganese was still outside standards, but there had been a massive improvement. In fact, the farmer stated that it was “A vast improvement”.

For farmers looking to clean up their water supply without endless application of chemicals or Councils searching for a cost effective way to meet some of the 3 Waters clean water objectives, the HydroBoost product could solve a number of problems in a very cost effective way.
